Course Details

Learn the basics of what it takes to be a good television news reporter, including how to structure a piece, write a killer script, deliver a live report, and conduct on-camera interviews. If you have a background in print journalism (or even if you don't), this class will provide the fundamentals to pursue a career in television journalism.

Students will tape an interior report and an exterior stand-up (i.e., a "live from the scene" report).

In this class, you will learn how to:
  • Write a compelling script
  • Set up feature pieces
  • Turn a print article into a good television piece
  • Understand the video editing process
  • Deliver a good "stand-up"
  • Tell a good TV package from a bad one
  • Film a feature or breaking news story
By the end of this class, you will have:
Two taped appearances.

Admission Requirements:
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history) and your desired outcome for this class. No writing sample required.

Melissa Tamplin
Melissa Tamplin is a bilingual broadcast journalist. She has worked on-air in six different television markets, most recently as a freelance reporter at WNBC-TV in New York. Prior to that, she worked as an anchor and reporter at WFAA in Dallas, a reporter at WBRC in Birmingham, as an anchor and reporter at WAPT in Mississippi, and as a main co-anchor at KRBC in Texas. Melissa began her career as a producer and on-air reporter at KCEN-TV in Waco, TX.

Melissa earned her master's degree in Journalism from Columbia University in 2005. When she's not teaching, Melissa is busy completing her first nonfiction book.
